Rose Dennison, the Ombuds for the Howard County Public School System, handled 100 cases in the past year according to a report delivered to the Board of Education last week. The caseload for the 2009-10 school year increased 16% from the prior year.
Dennison, who was hired two years ago, said most of her cases dealt with instances of bullying and harassment. Parents and other caretakers comprised 94% of visitors, 5% were school system personnel and 1% were community members. She also reported that 21 cases were about problems at the elementary school level, 25 at the middle school level and 52 at the high school level. Two cases concerned issues not specific to a particular level in school. (Columbia Flyer.)
