Vale, the world’s biggest iron ore producer, is gearing up to move into rare earth mining as Brazil tries to compete with China to supply some of the world’s most sought-after metallic elements, says Brazil’s science and technology minister, Aloizio Mercadante.
The government has met several industrial companies to line up customers for rare earths, a group of 17 elements which are primarily used to make components for such items as wind turbines, electric cars, and computer screens.

Revenues at General Electric’s Latin American operations surged 30 per cent in the first quarter of this year from the same period in 2010 and should continue to climb as the rapidly growing region rushes to improve its creaking infrastructure, the US industrial group has told the Financial Times.
Emerging market countries, and especially Brazil, which is preparing to host the soccer World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games two years later, are increasingly being seen as a strategic base for GE as it looks to slim down its financial businesses and focus more on industrial projects.

In addition to this new source of foreign investment, China has become a new export market for Latin America. Well over $50 billion of Latin American products, chiefly iron and copper ores, soya, and crude oil, will reach China this year as well.
China's unprecedented and impressive growth has been a great boon to Latin America in the short-term. It is up to Latin American nations to translate these short-term gains into longer-run economic development.

NTT Data Corp., the network-services unit of Japan’s largest phone company, may spend as much as 300 billion yen ($3.7 billion) on acquisitions, focusing on targets with Brazilian operations, President Toru Yamashita said.
NTT Data is in talks with several targets that may result in purchases within a year, Yamashita said in an interview in Tokyo however, he declined to specify any names.
Helped by a stronger yen, it aims to capitalize on the expansion by Japanese manufacturers including Toyota Motor Corp. and Komatsu Ltd. in Latin America.
