PMA Offices Closed After Hurricane Irene

The New Jersey offices of Professional Management Associates, LLC, are closed today due a power outage. The staff that support the International Ombudsman Association cannot receive calls or emails. Serious emergency can be directed to IOA Communications Committee Co-Chair Samantha Levine-Finley. PMA hopes to be back online tomorrow and will provide updates as conditions change. (IOA News.)

Job Posting: University of California San Francisco

The new Office of the Ombuds at UCSF is hiring an Associate Mediation & Facilitation Officer. The position will provide group facilitation, training and mediation services for faculty, staff and students to address workplace conflict and communication problems.

Applicants must have a BA/BS with a major in a related field and six years of relevant experience; and mediation training and experience. Knowledge of UC policies and procedures is preferred. The position will report to Randy Daron, who was appointed Campus Ombuds earlier this year. (Brassring, Req. No. 36385BR.)

Certification Board Appoints Three New Directors

Three new directors have been appointed to the Board of Certification for Certified Organizational Ombudsman Practitioners:

  • Constance Bernard, Ombudsman - International Bank for Reconstruction and Development;
  • Wendy Friede, Principal - Friede Consulting Services; and
  • Robert C. Bordone, Director of Harvard Negotiation & Mediation Clinical Program and professor, Harvard Law School.
Bordone is a 'public director' (not a practicing Ombuds) as required by the CO-OP bylaws. Bernard and Bordone's terms begin in September and Freide's in October. The appointments fill vacancies left by Carolyn Noorbakhsh (who stepped down in July), Diane Dorian (who will be retiring in October), and public member David Brubaker whose term ended in August.

Tanjung Manis has all attributes to become world-class Halal hub

As Sarawak moves into high gear to the era of massive industralisation in the migration from the medium income to high income economy or modern economy, it will be producing more and move products through value-added industries mainly downstream activities.

By then the world market and those in Peninsular Malaysia should get more and more products with “made in Sarawak” label. This should not be a problem as even now Sarawak has got a fair share of publicity.  Generally, Sarawak has the image of being an exotic tropical environment where the people live deep in the rainforest with animals and plants of all sorts.

Sibu to Tanjung Manis road

Currently, Sarawak managed to value-add to the natural gas onto LNG for export market. In addition, the timber resources have further developed through value added downstream activities that give the State better premium in the export markets.

For that reasons, the State has decided to do more value added activities domestically by utilising the readily available raw materials cutting across all sectors of the economy. Though the State has the skills and manpower, it still requires the outsourcing of technology and knowledge to constantly improve production and productivity.

The objective to further promote value added activities will also be achieved with the inflow of investment in trigger projects in SCORE that will create many downstream value added activities. Eventually, these activities will generate many new high value businesses and job opportunities for the local people. Thus the State’s journey can be expedited towards becoming high income and developed State by 2020.

Obviously, this romantic image of Sarawak should be exploited fully for tourism. Obviously, it is not being done so.   For example, the State can boast of varied cultures in the natural setting.  In this regards, visitors can take their time to trek through the jungles and enjoy the friendliness and warmth of the local people.

Sibu-Tanjung Manis Bridge
Sarawak has the world’s oldest tropical rainforests, which is a manifestation of the State government’s efficient sustainable forest management practices.  Hence, the State is well known among local and international visitors primarily because of the national parks such as the World heritage of Gunung Mulu and Niah caves, which contain some amazing natural wonders. Tourists from the Middle East should be encouraged to come and experience the pristine tropical forest.

Besides, the Hydroelectric Power dams in Bakun and Batang Air also create panoramic and spectacular lakes with beautiful islands in them. In addition, the State is offering city lifestyle as more and more hotels and shopping complexes are being built in towns and cities like Kuching, Sibu and Miri.

Generally, the people comprising of various ethnic groups, religious beliefs and other differences are very friendly.  They talk good English to enable them to communicate with visitors and make them feel at home during the visit. With greater air accessibility, Sarawak should be able to lure more Middle East tourists in Kuala Lumpur to come over.

Sarawak is a hilly region with only about 24% of the landmass having reasonably good soil for agriculture.  The State government has been working on about a third of the arable land or 8% of it.  Even so, the agriculture policy has attracted some attention with regard to estate crops.

It has never been an easy geographical region to develop due to its vast  physical expanse of about 124,449 square kilometres or 37.7% of Malaysia’s total land mass, difficult terrain to traverse and dotted with widely dispersed population of approximately 19 people per square kilometre.

Despite the challenges, the State government over the years, since the middle of 1980s in particularly, successfully built more roads and bridges linking major towns to secondary towns and rural settlements. The State is now served by a system of road network of about 20,333 km long compared to only 1,340 km in the early years of independence.

Undoubtedly, Sarawak can market its image as a natural environment for good organic food products. Hence, efforts must be made to organise properly the rural communities for organic farming, which commands a premium in the world market. The “Made In Sarawak” can be synonymous with a healthy green environment.

Asean Bridge connecting Miri and Brunei
Even the State’s active involvement in the development of   Hydropower will not undermine its efforts to preserve healthy environment. Agreeably, hydropower is good clean energy for the environment and the future of the world.  Most of the products that are processed in Sarawak are also good for the future of the world.

For example, aluminium is a light weight metal that is important for making energy-saving transport equipment.  Most of the other metals being processed in Sarawak are for the recycle and recovery of precious metals.  These energy-intensive heavy industries may look dirty but Sarawak is helping the world to stay clean with the industrial development.

The development of Halal Hub, based on Islamic certification, is basically a healthy practice in all respects. The Halal Hub in Tanjung Manis will handle not only food but lifestyle and other aspects of living.

Tanjung Manis, with an area of 77,000 hectares is being developed as the largest halal hub in Malaysia, focusing on both the upstream and downstream food and manufacturing industries. The focus on halal industry is to capture the increasing demand for Halal products from both Muslim and non-Muslim markets globally.

Given Malaysia’s enviable geographic position in the heart of the market, with over 1 billion Muslims in the region and access to all other large markets, Tanjung Manis is an ideal location for Halal related companies to take advantage of such a lucrative market.

Indeed, Tanjung Manis has all the necessary attributes including large area for upstream activities coupled with good and logistic support to become the biggest and most successful Halal Hub in the region. In fact, more infrastructure projects are already in the pipeline to meet the demand of industries. The “Made in Sarawak” would carry this image of clean, green and organic when referring to Halal products.

Deer Cave, Mulu Sarawak
Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, in an interview with an international investment magazine, believes that Sarawak is capable of riding the wave of economic progress and still retaining the rainforests, Orang-utans, sea and tribal culture.

He says that the State is more than happy to open up to Middle Eastern investments in order to jumpstart the development of a world-class Halal hub facility in Tanjung Manis growth node. Commitments from the Middle Eastern concerns, it is possible to have a 100% fully integrated Halal supply chain, from the farm and all the way to the retail shelves.

He says the opportunity for growth is immense, with 2 billion captive consumers in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Malaysia is an authority in Halal production and certification standards. Sarawak, in addition, is free from rabies and foot-and-mouth diseases.

Works are in progress to develop the necessary infrastructure like expanding the treated water and electricity supplies, communication facilities, public amenities, a new township, expanded airports, deep sea ports and industrial zones.

James Madison University Will Establish Ombuds for Faculty

The public university in Harrisonburg, VA has announced that it will appoint its first Faculty Ombudsperson. According to Interim Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Jerry Benson, the initiative began in the Faculty Senate several years ago. The new position will complement the existing Ombuds for student and staff issues by serving as a resource for faculty members.

In addition, the Faculty Ombuds may make recommendations and offer feedback to the Faculty Senate and university administrators regarding policies and procedures affecting faculty. Internal nomination are being accepted through the end of September. JMU Staff Ombuds Cathy Thomas and Student Ombuds Jim McConnell worked on the task force that defined the new position. (JMU Provost's Office; Senate Minutes; Ombuds Charter.)

Columbia University Updates Gender-Based Misconduct Policy; Ombuds Exempt from Reporting

The Ivy League university in New York has revised its student policy for gender misconduct. Columbia's Gender-Based Misconduct Policies for Students, published earlier this month, more clearly defines who must report alleged violations and specifically exempts the university's Ombuds Officers:

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY
Any University official (e.g., Student Affairs staff, Advising and Residential Programs staff, Officers of Administration, Full-time and Adjunct Faculty, Teaching Assistants, etc.) informed of an allegation of gender-based misconduct involving students is expected to file a report with Student Services for Gender-Based and Sexual Misconduct. Certain University officers who are serving in a privileged professional capacity (i.e., counselors, clergy, medical providers, and rape crisis counselors) are not bound by this expectation, except as required by law. This also applies to persons serving as the Columbia University and Teachers College Ombuds officers.
The new procedures aim to ensure compliance with Title IX of the Higher Education Amendment of 1972, which prohibits gender-based discrimination in educational institutions. The update followed revelations that Columbia had never expelled a student in nearly eight years of investigations and hearing by its Office for Disciplinary Procedures for Sexual Assault. (Columbia Spectator; The SAFER Blog; Columbia Gender-Based Misconduct Policies for Students.)

Washington State University Names Next Faculty Ombuds

WSU has named Cathryn (Cathy) Claussen to the post of Faculty Ombudsman, filling the vacancy left by Ray Jussaume. In accepting the appointment, Claussen withdrew as the newly elected chair of the WSU Faculty Senate for 2011-12. "The decision was a hard one, but I took the ombudsman position because it is a more long term opportunity to help faculty, staff and students,” Claussen said.

Claussen graduated from California Poly Pomona and earned an MA from the University of Iowa and a JD from Georgetown Law School. She is a Professor in the WSU Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling Psychology, and is an authority in sport law. Her research focuses on discrimination and First Amendment issues in sport. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport. (WSU News.)

Sarawak must engage with world investors, industry players to move up economic ladder

For young people of ages between 17 to 20 years now, they will have every chance to get high paying jobs in the next five years with the development of the core heavy industries and later downstream activities in SCORE development area towards the year 2020 and beyond.

Tanjung Manis Halal Hub
It is projected that the development of SCORE will create about 1.6 million jobs, about 900,000 in the development area itself by the year 2030.  The rest will be created outside it. The hi-tech projects will go to Kuching while those related to tourism industry will be centred in Miri, which has set itself to specialize in the industry as a resort city.

As 55% of the jobs will be created in SCORE development area, those areas from Tanjung Manis all the way to Samalaju, down south to the border of Kapit and Baram, will experience a big shift in the population. The new development will create lots of job opportunities in real property development.

Miri has more than 600,000 people but the jobs projections will be 820,000. This means Miri will require more development in construction and greater growth in education. It will also have other development that accompanies a big shift in economic development, towards the year 2020 and beyond.  The education sector is expected to benefit the most in future development.

Conservatively, it is projected that 52% of the work force will comprise of sub- professionals and professionals or semi-skilled and skilled workers or people with qualifications from diploma level upward. The jobs will be for those with technical skills and training. They will be technically biased and pay very well.

Understandably, all the industries will require workers with various technical skills, for example, to do the maintenance works once the industries start to operate. More of them will be required during the period of operation as compared to those during the stage of decision making and construction.

Tanjung Manis Airport
For this reason, the State government has been making conscientious efforts to set up technical colleges and skills development training centers and conduct public awareness campaign to encourage young people, if they cannot go to universities, to pursue courses at technical colleges. Besides, they are also encouraged to pursue technical courses even in universities.

In this respect, the alumni, community leaders are urged to encourage young people to pursue technical courses in building their capacities for jobs that will be created towards the year 2020 and beyond.

The development of SCORE serves as a new foundation for Sarawak’s economy. It heralds a new era of industrial development, mainly the development heavy industries in the first five years.  The development of downstream industries will escalate using aluminum, palm oil, deep sea fishing and aquaculture after that period. The development of downstream industries using the right technology will also make the State to become world players like those, who are involved in the development of heavy industries.

Besides, the State will also be developing bio-tech industries, which will require more people with skills to become Laboratory assistants, Research assistants and technical posts. These are the sectors in the agro-based industries that require people with technical skills and expertise.

Understandably, Sarawak Electricity Board (SEB) will require more supporting staff in electrical and mechanical engineering with the State’s plan to generate by the year 2020 at least 6,000 to 7,000 MW of electricity to meet the requirements of local industries. The state must generate sufficient supply of electricity at reasonable costs in order to attract more investors to set up high energy consumption industries locally.

Basically, for Sarawak, to come up the ladder of economic success within the framework of Economic Transformation Program (ETP, means it has to be engaged with the world investors and players and not just small industries. The State must develop new sources. The development of heavy industries that can trigger many downstream industries is definitely the answer to all the expectations of the people, the new generation in particular.

Understandably, as the industries require huge investment, the State, through RECODA, has to invite big multi-national companies with investments range from RM4 billion, RM6 billion and sometimes RM 10 billion to develop them.  The gigantic projects cannot be carried out with small investments.

Tanjung Manis Integrated Port
The Government, on its part, has to spend up to RM1 billion or RM2 billion to construct roads to the sites of hydro dam.  To construct a hydro dam requires an expenditure of M4 billion or RM6 billion, sometimes RM10 billion.

There are no other states that have rivers for hydro dams to generate electricity except Sarawak.  Secondly, Sarawak has more than 500 million tons of coal reserves. However, the coal contains 20% to 30% of water and not suitable for export. In other words, the coal has moisture content.

However, it can be used to power generating station.  Ideally, the generating station must be set up near the coal site in order to generate electricity with less transportation costs. The State has the potentials to generate more than 20,000 megawatt of electricity, using coal and hydropower, in the next 20 years.  This means more factories that consume a lot of energy can be set up in Sarawak.

Generally, the State, like the rest of the country, is also implementing the Government Transformation Plan with the primary objective to migrate from the medium income to the high income economy towards the year 2020 and beyond. Understandably, it will demand greater innovation and creativity from workers in whatever jobs they do.

The industries and other economic activities will employ young people with skills and trainings on the process.  It is the only way for the State to achieve the status of a developed nation which must be sustainable; the state must not only achieve the goal but sustain the success for the future generations. The State per capita income has increased by seven times during the last 30 years.  That explains why the people are generally living a more comfortable life.

Tanjung Manis Residential Area
Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, during one of his dialogues with youth leaders, says Sarawak is on a firm ground to become a developed State by the year 2020. It has already achieved the per capita income of USD10,000 this year. So the target of USD 15,000, the international standard of measurement for the status of a developed nation, should not be difficult to achieve towards the year 2020.

Besides, with more and more people able to acquire superior knowledge, the State will be able to migrate from the medium income to high income economy or the modern economy during that period.

He recalls his request to the Federal government for a full-fledged university to be set up in Sarawak 10 years ago.  Now Sarawak has UNIMAS, three university campuses. The people start to believe they have chances. Now a student can spend 1/3 of the amount of money to go to university than during his time. When he went to Adelaide University in Australia, he had to pay three times more than the cost locally.

Pehin Sri Abdul Taib reminds the youth leaders that the only way to succeed or to get rich in life is by having superior knowledge.  They do not have to entertain the idea of being discriminated against as such negative feeling could make them feel disheartened; it make them feel it is of no use being smart. In other words, if they nurture that kind of attitude they will be discouraged to study properly.

Tanjung Manis Terminal
He says a person, who has got the brain power and right attitude should be able to do well in life in a developing country like ours. Generally, the people can do well provided they have the determination to work hard. For that matter, anybody can become rich provided they have superior knowledge.

Besides, the people must also learn more about management and understand the market much more than some people.

For example, a tour operator in Bario today is selling his tour package through the Internet. He does not use advertisement nor   employs a tour operator in Kuching to promote his tour package.  He posts pictures relating to jungle trekking, birds watching, lodging in longhouses and other activities. He has been successful because he uses his knowledge in business.

China Tops 2011 Index Rankings for Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy World
Aug 23, 2011

Influential commentators in Japan, Germany, Russia, the US, China, Spain, Italy, Thailand, Yemen and numerous other nations have all weighed in on the need to de-emphasise nuclear and focus on renewables in the wake of the Japanese tsunami and nuclear disaster. So concludes the Ernst & Young 2011 All Renewables Index.

At the same time, recent unrest and the risk of further conflict in the Middle East and North Africa region have highlighted crucial issues around energy supply security and oil price volatility. European governments have slashed budgets and reduced feed-in tariffs (FiTs), causing solar cell prices to fall while solar manufacturers' margins are being squeezed due to rising silicon and other commodity costs.

RANKINGS OVERVIEW

China has climbed to its highest ever score in the Index, principally by diversifying its renewables portfolio through an increased focus on offshore wind and CSP.

While China surpassed the US to become the world's largest energy consumer in 2010, environmental targets set out in the 12th Five-Year Plan include an increase in the proportion of energy from non-fossil fuels to 11.3 percent by 2015, from the current 8.3 percent. To meet this target, China says it intends to build at least 70 GW of new wind farms and 5 GW of new solar farms.

According to the report, the latest statistics indicate that, in 2010, the China Development Bank (CDB) made around $35 billion in low-interest credit available to Chinese renewables companies. This compares with the $4 billion of grants and $16 billion in loan guarantees awarded to clean-tech companies in the US.

China overtook the US at the end of 2010 to become the world leader in wind power, having installed around 16 GW in 2010 or almost half of global installations - taking cumulative installed capacity to 42 GW. This is contrasted with an additional 5 GW installed in the US last year and a total of 40 GW.

However, China ranks second globally in terms of grid-connected capacity; more than a third of wind capacity had yet to be connected to the national grid at the end of 2010.

Nanowires Get into the Groove

Weizmann Institute of Science
Aug 22, 2011

Growing up is not easy, especially for tiny nanowires: With no support or guidance, nanowires become unruly, making it difficult to harness their full potential as effective semiconductors. Prof. Ernesto Joselevich of the Weizmann Institute’s Chemistry Faculty has found a way to grow semiconductor nanowires out, not up, on a surface, providing, for the first time, the much-needed guidance to produce relatively long, orderly, aligned structures. Since semiconductors with controlled structures are at the core of the most advanced technologies, this new research will hopefully enable the production of semiconductor nanostructures with enhanced electronic and optical properties, suitable for a wide range of applications including LEDs, lasers, information storage media, transistors, computers, photovoltaics and more.

Joselevich, Ph.D. student David Tsivion and postdoctoral fellow Mark Schvartzman of the Materials and Interfaces Department grew nanowires made of gallium nitride (GaN) using a method that usually produces vertical nanowires with excellent optical and electronic properties. These vertical wires only become unruly once they are harvested and assembled into arrays. To bypass this problem, the scientists used sapphire as a base on which to grow the nanowires. But rather than growing them on a smooth surface, they deliberately cut the sapphire along different planes of the crystal, resulting in various surface patterns including “steps” of nanometer dimensions between the different planes, as well as accordion-like, V-shaped grooves.

Car that runs on wine and cheese showcased at eco-rally

The Miami Herald
Aug 23, 2011

Imagine pulling up to a gas station, and rather than being offered the usual choice between regular or premium unleaded, the gas pump instead read "Chardonnay" or "Pinot Noir." Not for you, of course, but for your car!

Well, if one new experimental car, called the Lotus Exige 270E Tri-Fuel, ever catches on, this scenario may not be so far-fetched. The specialized Exige is capable of running on an ethanol fuel made from wine that isn't up to drinking grade, or whey, which is also a byproduct of the cheese or chocolate-making process. It was one of several new cars showcased last week at an eco-rally sponsored in part by the Prince of Wales' environmental initiative, Start, according to the Independent.

The car also can run on conventional gasoline (just in case you're out of fuel and still miles away from wine country), as well as methanol, a fuel that can be made by extracting CO2 directly from the atmosphere - potentially the ultimate carbon neutral fuel. The car is also capable of reaching 60 mph in less than four seconds, making it among the fastest road-legal cars in the world.

A few of the other cars featured at the eco-rally, which began in Oxford and finished at The Mall in central London, included the Lightning GT, an electric vehicle that can run 200 miles on a 10-minute charge, and the Biobug (also lovingly called the "Dung Beetle"), which runs on methane generated from human sewage.

"Vehicles that use fuels other than petrol or diesel are no longer concept cars of the future, but production cars of today," said Andy Dingley, a spokesman for Bridgestone U.K., which also sponsored the event. As the global recession continues, more and more people are looking at greener cars, he added.

Although wine and cheese may seem like alternative fuels better suited for those with a prince's salary, the concept cars nevertheless represent a growing diversity of choice available to car buyers of the future.

The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-Fuel is still in the research and development phase, so it isn't available for purchase.

Waste not, want not

University of California, Irvine
Aug 23, 2011

Imagine being able to get the equivalent of 70 miles per gallon in your car, keep your home cool and power your computer – all from sewage. Thanks to technology developed by UC Irvine’s National Fuel Cell Research Center and partners, that’s now possible.

Ten years of hard work, led by center associate director Jack Brouwer, has paid off in a cutting-edge project at the Orange County Sanitation District in Fountain Valley. A unique fuel cell generator simultaneously and continuously converts gas created in wastewater digesters to hydrogen used for zero-emission vehicle fuel, electricity and heat in a highly efficient manner.

“This will reduce smog and greenhouse gases and mean a better quality of life for Southern Californians,” says Brouwer, showing off the white generator box and shiny silver pipes across from a waste settling pond, along with a brand-new hydrogen fueling station.

Starting this month, drivers of select hydrogen-run cars will be able to exit the 405 freeway at Euclid Avenue and fill up with converted sewage waste. Numerous major automakers have announced plans to commercially manufacture such vehicles by 2015. Using locally produced hydrogen will increase its supply and bring costs in line with other renewable energy sources.

“This is a paradigm shift,” says center director Scott Samuelsen. “We’ll be truly fuel-independent and no longer held hostage by other countries. This is the epitome of sustainability, where we’re taking an endless stream of human waste and transforming it to transportation fuel and electricity. This is the first time this has ever been done.”

Power-generating device could be embedded in footwear

Engineerblogger
Aug 24, 2011

If the vision of Tom Krupenkin and J. Ashley Taylor comes to fruition, one day soon your cellphone - or just about any other portable electronic device - could be powered by simply taking a walk.

In a paper appearing this week (Aug. 23) in the journal Nature Communications, Krupenkin and Taylor, both engineering researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, describe a new energy-harvesting technology that promises to dramatically reduce our dependence on batteries and instead capture the energy of human motion to power portable electronics.

"Humans, generally speaking, are very powerful energy-producing machines," explains Krupenkin, a UW-Madison professor of mechanical engineering. "While sprinting, a person can produce as much as a kilowatt of power."

Grabbing even a small fraction of that energy, Krupenkin points out, is enough to power a host of mobile electronic devices - everything from laptop computers to cell phones to flashlights. "What has been lacking is a mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion technology that would work well for this type of application," he says.

Current energy harvesting technologies are aimed at either high-power applications such as wind or solar power, or very low-power applications such as calculators, watches or sensors. "What's been missing," says Taylor, "is the power in the watts range. That's the power range needed for portable electronics."

Solar power, the researchers explain, can also be used to power portable electronics, but, unlike human motion, direct sunlight is usually not a readily available source of energy for mobile electronics users.

In their Nature Communications report, Krupenkin and Taylor describe a novel energy-harvesting technology known as "reverse electrowetting," a phenomenon discovered by the Wisconsin researchers. The mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy by using a micro-fluidic device consisting of thousands of liquid micro-droplets interacting with a novel nano-structured substrate.

This technology could enable a novel footwear-embedded energy harvester that captures energy produced by humans during walking, which is normally lost as heat, and converts it into up to 20 watts of electrical power that can be used to power mobile electronic devices. Unlike a traditional battery, the energy harvester never needs to be recharged, as the new energy is constantly generated during the normal walking process.

The initial development of this technology was funded by a National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research grant. Now Krupenkin and Taylor are seeking to commercialize the technology through a company they've established, InStep NanoPower.

In their work, Taylor and Krupenkin were inspired by severe limitations that current battery technology imposes on mobile electronics users. As any cellphone or laptop user knows, heavy reliance on batteries greatly restricts the utility of mobile electronic devices in many situations. What's more, many mobile electronics are used in remote areas of the world where electrical grids for recharging batteries are often not available. Cellphone users in developing countries often have to pay high fees to have cellphones charged. Similar problems face military and law enforcement personnel. Modern soldiers, for example, head into the field carrying as much as 20 pounds of batteries to power communications equipment, laptop computers and night-vision goggles.

The energy generated by the footwear-embedded harvester can be used in one of two ways. It can be used directly to power a broad range of devices, from smartphones and laptops to radios, GPS units, night-vision goggles and flashlights.

Alternatively, the energy harvester can be integrated with a Wi-Fi hot spot that acts as a "middleman" between mobile devices and a wireless network. This allows users to seamlessly utilize the energy generated by the harvester without having to physically connect their mobile devices to the footwear. Such a configuration dramatically reduces power consumption of wireless mobile devices and allows them to operate for much longer time without battery recharge, the Wisconsin researchers say.

"You cut the power requirements of your cellphone dramatically by doing this," says Krupenkin. "Your cellphone battery will last 10 times longer." Even though energy harvesting is unlikely to completely replace batteries in the majority of mobile applications, the UW-Madison researchers believe it can play a key role in reducing cost, pollution and other problems associated with battery use. The hope, they say, is that the novel mechanical to electrical energy conversion process they pioneered can go a long way toward achieving that goal.
