The UK has launched the consultation period for Network Rail's five-year £1bn Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme, which promises to revolutionise central Scotland's rail network.
The public consultation will continue until November 2011 and will cover seven local authorities, which are home to almost two thirds of Scotland's population.
The project will electrify most of the central belt network, reducing journey times on the main Glasgow to Edinburgh route to 37 minutes and more than doubling the number of services.
The improvement will see train services between Glasgow and Edinburgh increase to 13 services per hour, from the current five or six.
The work includes modernisation of Edinburgh's Haymarket station into a modern transport interchange and the electrification of 350km of the existing rail network.
The project is expected to be completed by 2016.
