The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the organization that manages billions of dollars of Holocaust reparations payments, announced that it will appoint an independent Ombudsman. The Claims Conference Board of Directors voted to create the Ombuds position on July 13, but the role has not yet been defined fully.
According to the board's resolution, the ombudsman should be “a person of stature and probity, with unquestioned integrity, who is neither a recipient of funds from the Claims Conference, nor has any connection to any member organization of the Claims Conference.” The move is seen as a response to several years of complaints the organization lacks transparency and the recent discovery of significant fraud by several employees.
